Of all of William Shakespeare's play, this is one of the most well
known and best loved. It is also one which involves great complexities of
plot and character development.
It is the story of a night of confusion in a haunted
wood. Four young lovers try to resolve their passions. Six worthy workmen try to rehearse a play for Duke Theseus
and his bride to be, Hippolyta.
They all stumble haplessly about in the magical moonlight,
while powerful, mischievous spirits play havoc with both hearts and minds.
It is a story about a miraculous, juicy flower whose essence
is a magical, love potion. The magic within this flower has the ability to
turn hate into love, and love into hate. It has often been written, and
sung about in the past that "There's a thin line between love and
hate", but it takes true magic to cross this boundary. It is the story of fools and fairies. It is the story of Nick Bottom, an actor who becomes a
hideous abomination, and who finds himself deep in the loving arms of Titania,
Queen of the Fairies.
The play has been abridged by Nick Newitt. The aim is
to emphasise the ideologies of the Natural World and people living in the
1970s. When you come to see it, and as you watch the play, please explore
how when Humanity and Nature work in harmony, we experience peace.
However, when there is conflict, there must always be war of some sort.
The truly Natural individual will behave calmly and with consideration for
others. Return to Swineshead Village
